Member for Western Victoria, Gayle Tierney has welcomed Brumby Government funding to St Patrick’s, Port Fairy, for a new bike shed.
Forty Victorian primary and secondary schools will get new bike sheds for students with the announcement of $200,000 for the second round of Brumby Government’s Go for your life Bike Shed Seeding Grants.
Ms Tierney said the grant would continue to encourage more young people to stay healthy through sport and recreation.
“This is a great boost for our local students who want to ride their bikes to school,” She said.
“We want to give our children the best start in life and help keep them on track. Through this program we are encouraging young Victorians to stay healthy and active.”
The Minister for Sport and Recreation, James Merlino, said the funding was an important part of the campaign to curb obesity rates in children and promote an active, healthy lifestyle.
“Research tells us that providing secure bike storage facilities will increase the number of students who ride to school,” Mr Merlino said.
“Obesity rates across the whole population are rising, and this is one way to increase physical activity and improve the health of our children and young people.”
The grants are coming out of the Brumby Government’s $2.9 million fund over four years to the Go for your life Flagship Bike Plan, which aims to increase the number of children riding to and from school.
