Birregurra District Historical Centre Inc is among seventy-nine community groups across Victoria to share in $350,000 of Brumby Government funding to help preserve and share local stories, Member for Western Victoria, Gayle Tierney said today.
Ms Tierney said the latest round of grants through the Local History Grants Program reflected a rich array of local stories from the region’s diverse community.
“The project supported reflects the passions, the interests, the issues and the histories of the region’s communities. They preserve information that tells us much about who we are, where we’ve come from and our place in the world,” Ms Tierney said.
“The recipients represent a wide range of community groups. They are largely volunteer-based, and I commend all the fantastic volunteers who give their time, energy and hard work to preserving, promoting and sharing the stories of our communities.”
The $2,330 grant awarded to the Birregurra District Historical Centre Inc is for the purchase a lightweight, portable, six-panel display unit & carry bag with a roll-up banner & stand, to promote the historical centre and region at various functions as a travelling display.
Ms Tierney said 10 new identified Victorian Places of Deposit had been evaluated as facilities suitable for looking after public records.
“Many organisations across the state have been certified in this way, and are now legally able, if they choose, to look after public records no longer being used by public bodies such as water authorities and local councils,” she said.
The Local History Grants Program is managed by the Public Record Office Victoria and funded by the Brumby Government through the Community Support Fund.
