Eight groups in Warrnambool have received self help grants under the Brumby Government’s Disability Self Help Program, Member for Western Victoria, Gayle Tierney said.
Ms Tierney said over 170 disability self help groups across Victoria will share in $220,000 in funding from the Brumby Government.
“Groups across the state were eligible to apply for grants of up to $5000 under the Disability Self Help Program to help with running costs or out of pocket expenses,” Ms Tierney said.
“The grants received in Warrnambool were awarded to:
– Warrnambool Stroke Support Group – $200
– Warrnambool Support Group – $462
– Warrnambool Parkinson’s Support Group – $1,000
– Warrnambool Polio Support Group – $350
– Dyspraxia Awareness Group – $410
– Down Syndrome Support Group – $370
– South West MS Peer Support Group – $300
– Early Intervention Support Group – $300
“This funding to disability self help groups recognises the vital role they have within the Warrnambool community,” Ms Tierney said.
“The Brumby Government has an ongoing commitment to providing financial support to disability self help groups in recognition of the special contribution they play in supporting their members across our community.”
The Disability Self Help Program provides financial support to self help groups to:
• Increase the capacity of people with a disability to live independently and fully in their own community;
• Provide peer support and exchange of information amongst people with a disability their families and carers, in the community; and,
• Deliver increased educational opportunities on problems that individuals are experiencing.
In all, 179 groups across the state will receive funding under the Disability Self Help Program.
