The Brumby Labor Government is providing up to $7 million in grants to local governments to tackle climate change through sustainable local initiatives.
Member for Western Victoria, Gayle Tierney MP said the grants would be made under the Victorian Local Sustainability Accord.
The Accord is a partnership agreement to strengthen cooperative efforts between the state government and local governments to enhance Victoria’s environmental sustainability. So far 74 of Victoria’s 79 councils have become signatories to the Accord.
“The Brumby Labor Government understands the importance of partnering with local governments on grassroots initiatives that can have a real impact on climate change and help create a sustainable future for all Victorians,” Ms Tierney said.
“This round of Accord funding will focus on projects that promote councils working collaboratively with their communities to develop innovative strategies and solutions that meet the challenges of climate change and deliver sustainable environmental outcomes.
“Through four previous funding rounds since its launch in 2005, the Victorian Local Sustainability Accord has strengthened cooperative efforts between the state government and local governments.
“Local governments have delivered 58 projects across Victoria, working with their local communities to develop a strategic approach to local sustainability issues.”
The Victorian Local Sustainability Accord grants comprise $4 million from the Victorian Government’s Sustainability Fund and $3 million from the Ready for Tomorrow: A Blueprint for Regional and Rural Victoria.
Ms Tierney also launched the Victorian Local Sustainability Accord Delivery Framework 2010-2012 which provides direction for the Accord over its next phase.
Accord funding will be made available to local governments through three grant streams:
• Individual Grants to support resource constrained councils;
• Partnership Grants to foster innovation and collaboration; and
• Regional Grants to support rural partnerships.
Councils can apply for the funding until December 21. Victorian Local Sustainability Accord Funding Guidelines are available to assist councils in preparing their applications to the Accord.
