Member for Western Victoria, Gayle Tierney MP today congratulated Ursula Hughson from Warrnambool Collage on winning the soccer award at the 15th annual Victorian School Sports Awards.
The 2008 Victorian School Sports Awards (VSSA) recognise the sporting achievements of staff, students and volunteers in primary and secondary schools across the state.
“Ursula is among 43 primary and secondary students, two teachers and two community volunteers who received awards for excellence,” Ms Tierney said.
“This is a terrific effort and demonstrates what can be achieved in the sporting field with passion and determination.”
Ursula is a highly motivated and committed athlete who has competed at a very high level of competition in soccer throughout 2008.
She was named captain for the Victorian State Under 17 team, which competed at the Nationals in July. She was selected for the Melbourne Victory squad and was also a member of the Open Vic Vision squad, who competed against Beijing.
Warrnambool College recognises Ursula as a positive role model for young aspiring female athletes.
An all-star line-up were present at the awards ceremony including, including Beijing Olympic rowing gold medallist Drew Ginn, world catamaran champion and Beijing Olympic medallist Glenn Ashby, Australian netball squad member Caitlin Thwaites and former Australian Opals basketballer Emily McInerny.
Ms Tierney said the Victorian Government is leading the way in encouraging a healthy and active lifestyle, with compulsory sport and physical education in primary and secondary schools, extra sports equipment, joint use sports facilities, more sports facilities and bike sheds.
This is further strengthened with the Victorian Government’s $150 million ‘Go for your life’ campaign, aimed at improving eating habits and increasing physical activity among Victorians, is a national leader in promoting healthy living.
